Hooking up your utilities

Basic things you need to know about utilities and fees when you move to Brevard County.

ELECTRICITY

Florida Power & Light Co. requires a deposit that varies according to a customer's credit rating. An initial service charge is included on the first bill.

A certificate of occupancy following an electrical inspection is required for first-time service for a new home.

GAS

Florida City Gas supplies natural gas to most of Brevard. The company requires a meter deposit that varies according to the amount of monthly gas usage.

The meter deposit is refunded with interest after 12 months to customers with good payment records. A $50 startup fee is required.

TELEPHONE

You can call AT&T at 888-757-6500 from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday to set up residential service.

You can call 866-620-6000 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday for business service.

If calling from out of state or via a cell phone, call 800-753-2909. A deposit amount is determined by the customer's credit report.

Customers must give their name, address and Social Security number.

WATER, SEWER, TRASH

Charges for sewer, water and trash rates vary in the county. Deposits are refunded when service is disconnected.

Barefoot Bay and Snug Harbor: Residents pay a $100 deposit for water and sewer service to the Brevard County Water Resources Department, a nonrefundable account set-up charge of $15 is required. Call 772-664-5916.

Cocoa: The city provides service from Port St. John south to the Pineda Causeway in north Melbourne and includes residents from Merritt Island, Cocoa Beach, Suntree, Viera and Cape Canaveral. Charges vary.

All customers pay a $20 administration fee that shows up on the first bill. Cocoa residents may pay sewer deposits of $50 (inside city limits) or $60 (outside city limits), plus $40 for water. Cocoa customers on septic tanks pay only the $40 water deposit.

Cocoa Beach: Residents pay up to $95 for sewer.

Suntree/Viera: Residents may pay deposits of $60 for county sewer, $40 for city water.

Rockledge: Residents pay a $40 sewage deposit. Contact Rockledge City Hall at 321-690-3978.

Melbourne: The city supplies water to its residents and those of Indian Harbour Beach, Satellite Beach, Indialantic, Melbourne Beach, Melbourne Village and parts of West Melbourne.

The city requires a $43 water deposit and a $77 sewer deposit for mainland residents and customers on city water. A $103 water and sewer deposit is required for beachside residents on county sewer.

Mims: The residents use county water and sewer service.

A $30 deposit is required for water service. A $90 deposit is required for water and sewer service, and account set-up fee of $15 is required.

Palm Bay: The city provides water and sewer service through its utilities department. Residents pay $100 deposit for water, $100 for sewer and a nonrefundable administrative fee of $16.23. For an additional $5, the city will perform a credit check. If a renter's credit check is favorable, the renter will only be responsible for half of the deposit. If an owner's credit check is favorable, the deposit may be waived.

After three years of excellent credit, water and sewer deposits can be refunded.

Titusville: Residents are charged $40 for water, $60 for sewer service and a $14 deposit for garbage pickup. A $15 nonrefundable administrative fee may apply. Deposits refunded after three years of good credit.

West Melbourne: A $100 deposit is required to establish service and a nonrefundable $10 service fee will be added to your first bill. Trash collection billing included in water-sewer bill. Deposit is refunded when service is disconnected.

TRASH COLLECTION AND RECYCLING

Waste Management provides trash collection in Brevard County, excluding Rockledge and Titusville, where the city provides its own service. Curbside service pick-up times and disposal options vary across Brevard County.

Brevard County Solid Waste Management provides a recycling hot line to answer questions about how and where to dispose of specific items. Call 321-633-2043 or visit www.brevardcounty/swr.us to download the recycling directory.

Residents of Brevard County who have curbside service can request a recycling bin. In Rockledge, call 321-690-3961; in Titusville, call 321-383-5755. For all other parts of the county, call 321-636-6894 or 321-723-4455. Recycling bins need to be placed by the curb before 6 a.m.

The Reusable Resources Adventure Center accepts items such as paper, wood, fabric and plastic to recycle into children's art projects. Call 321-729-0100 or visit www.reusecenterbrevard.org
